Bankruptcy Victims: The American Shopping Mall is Changing

There are rumblings that odds and ends retailer, Brookstone is considering potential sale partners or bankruptcy.

Check out this article covering stores that have dissapeared because of bankruptcy in the 1990's.

Ultimately, the changing climate of e-commerce has effected the ability for smaller retailers to survive in the traditional mall format.

The shopping mall is an American icon that has been part of the fabric of the American life since the Southdale Mall first opened in Minneapolis in 1956.

As much as the retailers filing bankruptcy themselves, the actual shopping malls are facing a tough financial reality.

There were over 1,500 malls contstructed in the 50 years between 1956 through 2006.  There have been no new malls constructed since 2006.

Malls are facing the reality that internet shopping is continually changing the shopping habits of consumers.

Recently, the Mall in Columbia began a complete reconstruction of a significant part of the its retail space in hopes of finding new ways to appeal to consumer interests.

Creating what is called a "life-style plaza," The Mall in Columbia has created an open-air city walk with the first stores recently opening.  This is part of a planned walkway between a new living/retail space being developed by Howard Hughes on the other end of the parking lot.

Ultimately, the goal is to provide an experience that one cannot get by clicking buttons and ordering something from Amazon.com.

If it doesn't work, more bankruptcies and empty malls are likely to occur.
